Four ‘Feeding Zones’ Planned in City; Financial Aid for Injured Girl
Temporary Shed for Stray Dog Sterilization in Hirebagewadi
The Belagavi City Corporation will build a temporary shed in Hirebagewadi to house and sterilize stray dogs as part of its population control efforts. The sterilization contract has been re-tendered, and once a new contractor is selected, the Hirebagewadi facility’s capacity will be increased, officials said. Stray dogs from across the city will be brought to this facility, and the sterilization campaign will start once the shed is ready, according to Municipal Commissioner Shubha B.
Action After Marutinagar Dog Attack
Following a recent incident in Marutinagar where a stray dog attacked a two-year-old girl, Commissioner Shubha shared that a local rickshaw driver was feeding meat to stray dogs, causing them to gather in large numbers. This led to the attack on the child. “The rickshaw driver has been identified, and a police complaint will be filed,” the Commissioner said, urging people not to throw food or meat waste on roads.
Warning to Meat Vendors
The Corporation has issued strict notices to meat vendors who dump waste in open areas, as this attracts stray dogs and creates problems. “If this continues, strict action will be taken,” warned Commissioner Shubha.
Designated Feeding Zones
To manage public feeding of stray dogs, the Corporation plans to set up four ‘Feeding Zones’ in the city. “People who want to feed stray dogs must use these designated areas only,” the Commissioner stated.
Financial Aid for Injured Girl
The Municipal Corporation has announced financial assistance for the treatment of the girl injured in the dog attack.
Veterinary Appointment and Ongoing Efforts
Although the Corporation has an Animal Husbandry Department, it currently lacks a veterinarian. “A veterinary doctor will be appointed soon,” said Commissioner Shubha, noting that discussions have been held with the District Collector. Limited sterilization surgeries are currently being conducted at the Srinagar facility, but large-scale operations will shift to Hirebagewadi once ready. The rabies vaccination drive for stray dogs is also ongoing and will be expanded.
Sterilization Contract Challenges
The current sterilization work is managed by a contractor appointed in 2022. After three failed tender attempts, the Corporation has issued a fourth tender, hoping for a successful outcome this time.
