Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi has called for the trifurcation of Belagavi district to create three new districts—Belagavi, Gokak, and Chikkodi. He also stated that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will soon convene a meeting of all MLAs before taking a final decision on the proposed district reorganisation.

Speaking to reporters, Jarkiholi said the demand for the trifurcation of Belagavi district is longstanding. Proposals to divide the district into Belagavi, Gokak, and Chikkodi have been pending for several years. Although there have been recent demands to grant district status to Bailhongal and Athani, he clarified that the government’s view is to limit the reorganisation strictly to three districts.

He further said that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will soon hold consultations with all MLAs from the district to seek their opinions, following which a decision on the trifurcation will be taken.

Jarkiholi also clarified that the proposed division would not lead to any increase in Marathi-Kannada linguistic tensions or create administrative difficulties. He added that there is currently no plan to organise an Ahinda convention, though a decision on the matter may be taken in the future depending on the situation.
