Airspace Restrictions Leave Indian Nationals Stranded; CM Appeals to PM Modi for Immediate, Coordinated National Response
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has written a detailed letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in light of the rapidly evolving geopolitical situation in West Asia, urging urgent measures to ensure the safety and possible evacuation of Kannadigas and other Indian nationals stranded in several countries, including the United Arab Emirates (Dubai).
In his letter, the Chief Minister noted that recent advisories issued by India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation indicate that several West Asian nations have imposed airspace restrictions and issued Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs), significantly disrupting international flight operations. As a result, a large number of Indian citizens have been stranded, particularly in major transit hubs such as Dubai.
He highlighted that the prevailing security situation, ongoing hostilities, and the closure of civilian airspace have caused considerable anxiety among Indians residing abroad and their families back home. The Chief Secretary’s Office has already written to the Ministry of External Affairs, seeking immediate coordination to safeguard Kannadigas and other Indian nationals and to prepare contingency plans for possible evacuation. Similarly, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has been requested to engage with airlines to allow flexible rescheduling of tickets, waive penalties, and extend temporary assistance to affected passengers.
The Chief Minister urged the Central Government to consider the following measures:
- Ensure continuous monitoring, guidance, and protection through Indian embassies and consulates in affected countries.
- Prepare for priority-based special flights or evacuation operations, if required.
- Establish an inter-ministerial task force to coordinate efforts among the Ministry of External Affairs, Ministry of Civil Aviation, state governments, and airlines.
- Create an integrated digital platform for registration, tracking, and real-time dissemination of information.
- Direct airlines to offer flexible travel schedules, waive additional charges, and extend humanitarian assistance.
Siddaramaiah stated that the Karnataka Government has activated the State Emergency Operations Centre and all District Emergency Operations Centres on a 24/7 basis. Continuous coordination is being maintained with the Karnataka Resident Commissioner’s Office in New Delhi and the Rapid Response Cell of the Ministry of External Affairs, while senior nodal officers have been designated for immediate liaison with the Centre.
He emphasized that thousands of Kannadigas and other Indian nationals residing in West Asia play a vital role in India’s economy and international engagement. In such a sensitive period, a swift, coordinated, and compassionate national response would not only safeguard lives but also reaffirm the Republic of India’s unwavering commitment to every citizen.
The Chief Minister assured full cooperation from the Karnataka Government in supporting any initiative undertaken by the Central Government.
