Karnataka Approves Establishment of 31 Minority Women’s PU Colleges Across the State
Colleges to Be Set Up on Waqf Land to Promote Women’s Education

The Government of Karnataka has approved the establishment of 31 new women’s Pre-University (PU) colleges across all districts of the state to promote higher education among minority women. A formal Government Order has been issued by the Department of Minority Welfare, Haj and Waqf in this regard.

The decision was announced in the State Budget, which proposed setting up women’s colleges on vacant Waqf land. In the first phase, construction of buildings for 15 colleges has already commenced, while 16 additional colleges will be established in the next phase. In total, 31 Minority Women’s PU Colleges will be launched across 31 districts through Waqf institutions.

According to the department, the colleges will offer courses in all three streams — Science, Commerce, and Arts — and staff appointments will be made as per prescribed rules. The initiative aims to provide better access to quality education for minority women across the state.

Each college will admit 180 students in the first year, with 60 seats per stream. In the second year, another 180 seats will be added, taking the total capacity of each college to 360 students. The streams will include:

  • Science (PCMB)

  • Commerce (CEBA)

  • Arts (HEPS)

The government has directed that until permanent buildings are constructed by the Waqf Board, classes should commence in available Waqf buildings or, if necessary, in rented premises. District-level officials have been instructed to submit required proposals and financial estimates to the Minority Welfare Department for the smooth establishment of these institutions.

A total of 19 posts have been sanctioned per college, resulting in 589 new positions statewide. These include Principals, subject lecturers, language teachers, support staff, and Group-D employees. Appointments will be made in accordance with government rules or on a part-time basis where required.

The move is being described as a significant step toward strengthening educational infrastructure for minority women in Karnataka.
