Camp Police in Belagavi have successfully arrested two accused individuals involved in the act of insulting the statue of Mahatma Gandhi by placing a red Santa Claus cap on it.


The incident came to light when some miscreants placed a red Santa Claus cap on the statue of the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, located at Gandhi Chowk on Hindalga Road in the central part of Belagavi city. Photos of the incident went viral on social media, leading to widespread outrage and strong resentment.


Citizens, along with freedom fighters, demanded strict action against those who insulted the national leader.


Taking serious note of the matter, Camp Police initiated an investigation. Following the probe, police arrested Philip Simon Sapparappa (age 25), a resident of Bose Line in the Camp area, and Aditya Navjit Heda (age 25), a resident of Adarsh Nagar in Hindwadi.


After media reports highlighted the insult to Mahatma Gandhi’s statue, police acted promptly and took the accused into custody. A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections, and further investigation is ongoing.


Meanwhile, various social organisations and citizens have strongly demanded stringent action against those who insult statues of national figures in public places.
